The top rated start point to begin your journey on the Karnischen Höhenweg is Vierschach in South Tirol. This picturesque town attracts guests from around the world and is famous for the Helm ski region.
In winter you'll find 10 lifts for 22km of ski piste. Use the lifts in summer to set off on some great hikes and explore the area.
Tickets can be purchased directly at the lift.
Catch the lift from Vierschach to the start point of your hike along the Karnischen Höhenweg (KHW). On exit from the cable car you'll get your first view of the Southern Dolomites and a taste of what's to come. Begin trekking your way along the "Hüttenweg" in the direction of Monte Elmo.
The Sillianer Hut can be found on the Austrian side of the border and is around 6 km away from the upper station in Helm. Account for around 2 hours hiking when planning your tour. For experienced hikers there is also the option of continuing further to the "Obstansersee" hut.

We highly recommend “Bergsteigerdorf” Mauthen as the basecamp for your Karnische Höhenweg adventure. After acclimatizing for a couple of days, along with some easier hikes, you can start day 1 of your adventure with an early morning taxi to Vierschach. Take the cable car to your start point in Helm and 4 – 5 days later arrive at the beautiful “Untere Valentinalm” hut. From here you can take the track over Mauthner Alm or the Roman Trail back into the valley.
